PINK TURNS TO BLUE
PINK TURNS TO BLUE
This was the first PUNKD skull I ever made.
And I loved it so much I've been making variations ever since.
Hüsker Dü's "Pink Turns to Blue" is from their 1984 double album Zen Arcade — a record that basically rewrote what punk rock could be (it's a state of being not really a genre after all)
Bob Mould and Grant Hart were doing things with melody and emotion that hardcore wasn't supposed to do, and nobody could agree on whether that was brave or wrong.
It was brave.
Zen Arcade is the record that Nirvana, Pixies and a generation of alternative rock bands grew up on.
Grant Hart wrote this song. It's about loss and the particular cold that
follows it.
Pink turning to blue.
Warmth becoming something else.
The skull gets it.
I wanted to be quite restrained with this one — a stripe of spattered pink running down the middle of the skull with some light blue spatters over a darker blue body.
Simple idea, hard to execute.
Blue skulls are genuinely very difficult to photograph and this was no exception — what you see in the video is as close as I could get, but it looks better in real life.
They usually do.
Every variation I've made since comes back to this one. It started here.
