ABOUT

Richard Hillier makes skulls—raw, unapologetic, and impossible to ignore.

“Make Skulls, Not War” isn’t just a line—it’s the ethos behind the work.

Working with multiple mediums, his pieces live somewhere between art and defiance.

Each skull is a reminder that nothing lasts forever, but that doesn’t mean it can’t look damn good while it’s here.

Cracked, reworked, rebuilt—rooted in underground culture and a love for the beautifully broken, Richard turns the macabre into something loud, tactile, and strangely alive—challenging the idea that death is something to look away from.

Truth is, Richard would rather stay out of the spotlight and let the work do the talking.  Writing bios like this isn’t exactly the favourite part of the process—but it matters. Because the people who collect the work deserve to know who’s behind it.

Away from the studio, Richard is a family man (with a new black lab puppy called Milo).

A lifelong music obsessive, pulling inspiration from across the spectrum—heavy, melodic, chaotic, and everything in between: from sea shanties to Slayer. That balance of noise and meaning runs through every piece.

Design Notes

My orginal skulls were influenced by two artists - and a lifetime love affair with music:

Jamie Reid designed the sleeve for the Sex Pistols', Nevermind the Bollocks... album.  His simple use of limited bright colours inspired my PUNKD  collection.

I also love the loose style of my friend, Graham Roe's nature-meets-punk works - especially the way his pieces spill out, onto their frames.

My Skulls

I only release my lamps in small batches and each skull is a one of a kind piece of art.

Every SKULL GUY skull has a design-matched light base that contains a high quality, 10-stage, dimmable  LED ring lamp.

Each light base and skull contains strong neodymium magnets to ensure that both snap together to be perfectly seated, every time.

The base of each skull has a hand-painted Gorilla anti-slip coating which means it will stay put on most surfaces and won't scratch your furniture.

Each lamp is powered by a 5V USB-A connection.

Each skull weighs about the same as a little owl (between 270g and 310g) and the bases are approx. 50g.
